Do you need to use toners and what are they?

Using a toner in your skincare routine is optional, but it can offer certain benefits depending on your skin type and concerns. Toners are water-based liquids or mists that are applied to the skin after cleansing and before moisturizing. They can serve multiple purposes:

  1. Balancing pH: Toners can help restore the skin's natural pH balance, which can be disrupted by harsh cleansers or tap water. Maintaining the skin's optimal pH level can support a healthy skin barrier function.

  2. Hydration: Some toners are formulated with humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which attract and retain moisture in the skin. Using a hydrating toner can provide an additional layer of hydration, especially for dry or dehydrated skin.

  3. Cleansing residue removal: Toners can help remove any residual traces of dirt, oil, or makeup that may remain after cleansing. They can act as a secondary cleanser, ensuring the skin is thoroughly clean.

  4. Pore tightening: Certain toners contain ingredients like witch hazel or tea tree oil that have astringent properties. These ingredients can temporarily tighten the appearance of pores and provide a smoother skin texture.

  5. Enhancing absorption: Applying a toner before other skincare products can help prepare the skin to better absorb subsequent treatments, such as serums or moisturizers. It can create a hydrated and receptive surface for better product penetration for water based ingredients.

It's important to note that not all toners are created equal, and some may contain ingredients that could potentially irritate or dry out the skin. Look for toners that are alcohol-free, gentle, and suited to your skin type. If you have sensitive or dry skin, consider opting for hydrating or soothing toners.

Ultimately, whether to use a toner or not depends on your personal preference and the specific needs of your skin. If you choose to incorporate a toner into your routine, apply it after cleansing and before other treatment products. However, if you are satisfied with your current skincare routine and not experiencing any issues, you may choose to skip using a toner altogether.
